Guided Heritage Walk Fort Kochi

All the rich history of Cochin seems to concentrate in Fort Kochi. The area is unique with its bohemian feel. The blend of Dutch, Portuguese, British and Jewish influences still hover here in the buildings and the promenade here.  

A guided tour into the heritage areas of Fort Kochi is the best way to understand the spice trade and life in the bygone era. Like all walking tours there is ample opportunity to pause, observe and understand the history as you walk from the waterfront to the streets with businesses and ancient homes, which are now converted into heritage hotels, homestays and boutique cafes. 

The guide will give you an introduction into the history of Cochin and the main events that have shaped the city before the walk begins. 

Itinerary

• Meet at St Francis Church (India’s oldest European Church) built by the Portuguese Franciscan Friars
• Walk to the waterfront to view the Chinese fishing nets that dot Kochi's shores
• Move on to the Nehru Children’s Park area where heritage buildings like Koder House, Tower House, Old Harbour Hotel are situated
• View Fort Immanuel the erstwhile Portuguese bastion
• Visit the Dutch Cemetery
• There is always time for a stroll on the beach
• Walk on the Bishop’s House Road known for its heritage homes
• Stop at the Union Club Building
• See the Santa Cruz Basilica
• Finally end the walk with a tea or coffee at a local cafe

Notes & Inclusions:

• This 2-hour-walk is suitable for all ages and fitness levels
• You can join the walk either at 9:30am in the morning or at 4pm every day
• People with difficulty in mobility can be provided assistance - wheelchairs for example can be arranged if informed earlier.  
• English speaking guide with lots of tales on local history
• The guide will provide you notes or other printed handouts to help understand the history better, and for reference
• Bring sungalsses, hats and sunscreen
• Stay hydrated
