Churchgate and Heritage Mile walk
The guided Churchgate and Heritage Mile walk takes you into the heart of the old ‘Fort’. This part of South Mumbai has the colonial buildings and history that still renders a certain charm to the area. This is one of the richest areas of Mumbai. Stop to admire old fountains, buildings and enjoy the masterpieces at the Khala Ghoda art gallery and the Oval Maidan. Steeped in history, there is much to see in this part of Mumbai.
Itinerary
- Begin the walk at F.W. Steven’s gothic masterpiece, the grand Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus formerly known as the Victoria Terminus.
- Explore the ‘White Town’ or the European half of the old town that existed within the Fort walls.
- Walk down D.N.Road, also called the Heritage Mile of Mumbai, which even today has hues of its colonial past.
- See the ornate Flora Fountain and take in the atmosphere of one of the busiest parts of Mumbai.
- Move on to the historic art district of Kala Ghoda with its many Gothic buildings and many art galleries
- Visit the Oval Maidan where in a great phalanx lie the Old Secretariat, University Library and Convocation Hall, High Court building , the old PWD building and Telegraph Department.
- Finally take Veer Nariman Road (the former Churchgate Street) down to Marine Drive to enjoy the iconic skyline that has become the identity of Mumbai the world over.
